Daeder, the Recluse
Alignment: Neutral
Domains: Greater God, often called the God of the Dwarves, but has also been known as the God of Mountains
Symbol: Red Dwarven Hammer, symbolic for the dwarves, who were created from Daeder's own blood
Appearance: Since Daeder is known for his reclusive nature, he has not been seen often on the mortal plane, even though he is the only god who resides there with complete freedom of movement. When he does come out of hiding, Daeder appears as a strong young Dwarf dressed in the garb of a dwarven smith, with a long red beard. It is said that Daeder's eyes are the color of molten lava and, that if you look closely, you can seen mountains rising and falling in his eyes.
History: Of all the gods, Daeder is by far the most reclusive and aloof. Preferring his own solitude over all else, Daeder was never extremely active in the early history of the Gods. Daeder looked upon the other gods and their constant plotting against one another with a fair amount of disgust and annoyance. In fact, when Phykrell called a meeting of the gods to declare himself Lord of the Gods, Daeder, without a word, simply got up and left.
To Daeder, the gods were childishly ignoring the greatest power of all, a power which they all possessed, that of creation. Tired of the company available to him among the gods, Daeder set off for the mortal plane, where he found a clean canvas just waiting to be touched by his creative hand. With his great hammer, Daeder created vast mountain chains, great forests and sweeping deserts. He constructed cities for the mortals and ensured that great rivers flowed to these cities. It is rumored that the Great Waterfall of Ages, located deep in the Galen Mountains, was created by Daeder. This waterfall is unique in that it has no source other than the mountains; there is no sea, ocean or river nearby.
While the mortals took advantage of the great gifts bestowed upon them by Daeder, they showed little gratitude. The mortals were as indifferent to Daeder's creationism as the gods. In a rage, Daeder spilled his own blood upon the mortal plane, over the mountains and forests which he had created, and from his blood came forth the Dwarves. Unlike the other mortals, the Dwarves saw the beauty their God had created for them and took great joy in all that Daeder had to teach them. They travelled forth to the hills, mountains and caverns to live and worship the god they affectionately refer to as the "Great Father."
For a time, the other gods took little notice in Daeder's conduct on the mortal plane, and he seemed content to reside there with his beloved Dwarves. Soon Daeder's peace was broken by a call from Crest to meet with the Greater Gods in the heavens. Daeder went, expecting yet another god to be laying claim to the heavens. Instead, Crest told the other gods he had been studying the teachings of the ancestors and had learned of a great power called Magic, which he wished to share with them all...in exchange for favors from each of them. Daeder shrugged, Crest's demands on him could not be so great, as the gods had always shown very little interest in him. When Crest turned to Daeder and requested that he construct a great moon to circle the earth below as well as a great fortress upon that moon for his home, Daeder was noticeably surprised that his skills had not gone unnoticed by at least one of the gods. Of course Daeder would accept Crest's request, it gave him an opportunity to show the gods exactly what they had been missing all these years...for Daeder could have built something like this for all of them had they merely taken the time to ask! Daeder built Crest a grand moon fortress, and Crest was quite pleased. Daeder accepted the Magic Crest gave him, already contemplating how he could use this magic to create something else....
Daeder returned to the mortal plane and was not disturbed again until the Second War of Fate, when many of his mountains were destroyed by Phykrell's follower, the Wizard Delrox. His children came to him and told him of the loss of their kin in the fall of the mountains, and their desire for revenge. Daeder had not expected Phykrell to dare disrupt his home, or harm his children, and the loss of so many
Dwarves combined with the destruction of his mountains by a foolish wizard of Phykrell's made Daeder very, very angry.
The Dwarves told Daeder of the great army Valdor was attempting to train and equip and asked their Father if they could help. Daeder knew that Valdor had taught his Dwarves how to make weapons and armor, and he was very grateful to Valdor for that. He encouraged the Dwarves to assist the Army of Valdor in any way they could, and gave them his blessing.
After Phykrell's defeat, the gods came to Daeder and asked him to build a great prison for Phykrell. Daeder, still angry at Phykrell for what he had done, accepted the task, and constructed the great prison at Crown Spires. When Phykrell was locked into his prison in the mountains, Daeder took the great key and shattered it with his hammer. The shards were given to a mortal guardian called Morgane to guard, and Daeder returned to his home, hoping that he would not be disturbed again.
His solitude was short-lived. Soon the child-god Basenbe, God of Fate and Visions, sought him out and told him of his vision of continued war on the mortal plane initiated by the gods. The last thing Daeder wanted was more war on the mortal plane, for it meant only more interruptions on his solitude. Daeder took up his hammer and went to a great valley. With powers given to him by Basenbe, as well as using the magic he learned from Crest, Daeder constructed the great Tower of Salt and Sandstone. In this tower, he placed rocks of control for each of the gods, and sealed the tower with great magic. As a result, the gods in the heavens were bound there and could not enter the mortal plane again without losing their powers, nor could Phykrell or Daeder leave the mortal plane without losing theirs.
This situation was perfect for Deader. With the other gods banned from the mortal plane, and Phykrell imprisoned, Daeder could finally have the peace and quiet he always wanted. To ensure his solitude, Daeder constructed a mountain fortress for himself on the mortal plane. This fortress is said to never be in the same place twice, and is quite difficult to find. Unless, of course, Daeder wants to be found. It is rumored that a few Dwarves know of the way to find Daeder in times of trouble, but no one knows who these dwarves are, or how to find them, either.
Followers: The followers of Daeder are naturally the
Dwarves. While they may follow the guidance of other gods, the Dwarves are conscious of who created them, and are grateful to have their god with them on the mortal plane. Over time, the Dwarves have even gone so far as to point out to the other races that they are a race truly "of the gods." Halflings and Gnomes appear to be the only other races that acknowledge the dwarven claim to greatness and, as a result, have found themselves well-received by their dwarven brethren.
